SYNOPSIS

In 2002, the Israeli government began construction of a 670km long wall in the occupied land of the West Bank. The massive structure winds like a giant snake along the West Bank, predominantly on Palestinian land destroying livelihoods, uprooting trees, confiscating water, imposing itself on the landscape like a divine plan. To appreciate the size and impact of this wall just think of the infamous Berlin wall except that the Israeli wall is twice the height and more than four times its length located in the most disputed area of the world: the Holy land.

In 2004 the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declared that Israel’s construction of a wall within the occupied Palestinian territory is in contravention to international law and called upon Israel to desist from its construction, dismantle those parts already built, and make reparations for all damages caused.

To the Palestinians the opinion of the ICJ was a historic turning point. But as we found out later, history once again refused to turn. Today on the eve of the 11th anniversary of the verdict of the ICJ, nothing has changed. To the contrary, the wall that was supposed to be “broken” and dismantled continues to be built and is near completion. The only things broken is international law and international resolve.

Twice the height of the Berlin wall and more than four times its length.
